How to Treat a Brown Spot on Skin
If you have a brown spot on your skin, you should first determine that it isn't skin cancer. Brown spots can occur for a variety of different reasons. They may be freckles, age spots or moles. Once you've ascertained that the brown spot is not dangerous, you can take steps to get rid of it. There are various treatment methods which can fade brown spots on the skin. Simple treatments include topical creams you can apply at home. There are also more invasive and expensive treatments you can have done at your dermatologist's office.

1
See your dermatologist. If you notice a new brown spot, it's a good idea to have it checked out by your doctor. If the spot seems suspect, your doctor may perform a biopsy to confirm it is not cancerous.

2
Take photos of the spot. You will then have a record to reference in case you notice changes in the brown spot. When you take the photos, place a coin next to it so you have a point of reference for its size. If you notice any changes in the spot such as color or size fluctuations, see your doctor.

Apply a skin bleaching cream to the spot. There are a variety of bleaching creams available over-the-counter in most drug and cosmetic stores. The creams work to gradually lighten areas of dark pigmentation. With regular use, your brown spot should eventually fade so it blends in with your surrounding skin. If you'd like a more serious bleaching cream, talk to your dermatologist about a prescription-strength cream.

Wear sunscreen. The majority of brown spots are caused by sun exposure. If you continue to expose your skin to the sun, your existing brown spot will darken and new spots will form. Apply a high-level SPF sunscreen to your skin daily, even on cloudy and rainy days. For additional protection, wear clothing that covers the area.

Get chemical peels. Regular chemical peels help to lighten brown spots. The chemicals burn the top layers of skin, effectively revealing younger, less damaged skin below. As a result, brown spots are generally less noticeable after a series of peels. Talk to your dermatologist about which strength peel is right for you.

6
Consider laser therapy. During treatment, intense laser light will target the pigment in your brown spot. The spot will be broken up and the pigment absorbed by your body's immune system. In addition, the light stimulates collagen production so your skin will look younger and smoother.
