Microsoft Outlook Express 6 is an email and news application designed by the Microsoft Corporation. It is part of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and is included with Microsoft Windows 98 through Windows XP. It can also be downloaded free online. Windows Vista operating system replaced Outlook with Windows Mail. Microsoft has released Windows Live Mail to take the place of both of these. Microsoft Outlook Express 6 differs from Microsoft's Outlook application, which is part of the Microsoft Office Suite. Even with all of the replacements and changes made, Microsoft Outlook Express 6 is still widely used by many computer users to send and receive email.

  1. Step 1

    Understand the basics of Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Outlook Express does not supply you with an email account. It is an application to use to manage and store your email accounts. This allows you to combine a number of different email accounts in one location. You can then use Microsoft Outlook Express 6 to send and receive emails for nearly all of your accounts.

  2. Step 2

    Add an email account to Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Have the information about each email account readily available. This includes the email address, username, password and in some cases, additional information as well. Click on "Accounts" under "Tools" on the Microsoft Outlook Express 6 menu bar. Follow the directions presented with the "wizard" to add each new email account or news group.

  3. Step 3

    Download and send email using Microsoft Outlook Express 6. New email messages will be downloaded when you open Microsoft Outlook Express 6. You can also do this by clicking on "Send and Receive All" located in "Send and Receive" under "Tools" on the menu bar. You can also utilize the "Send and Receive" icon to accomplish this. Compose a new email message a number of ways. Select "Message" located in "New " under "File." select "New" under "Message" on the toolbar or use the "Write Message" icon. Type the email and then click on the "Send" button.

    Create new folders and manage emails. Microsoft Outlook Express 6 has a minimal amount of default folders. Create new folders to sort your emails and for storage. Add new folders by selecting "Folder," under "New" that is located under "File" on the menu bar. You can click on "New," under "Folder" that is also under "File." Sort the incoming mail into specific folders using Microsoft Outlook Express 6 filters. Access them under "Message Rules" that is located under "Tools." Create rules to have your emails placed in specific folders.

    Use the help features of Microsoft Outlook Express 6 and online support. Learn more about the numerous options, features and methods of using Microsoft Outlook Express 6 through its extensive Help files. These are easily accessed from Help on the menu bar. Use the information found online that details how to use Microsoft Outlook Express 6 to find out further features of it. Helpful data can be accessed from Microsoft and other online resources.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are some email accounts that cannot be downloaded to Microsoft Outlook Express 6. Most of these email accounts can be worked with in Microsoft's Windows Live Mail.
