Valentine boxes are a tradition that has been around for generations of school age children. Each year children make homemade Valentine boxes to take to their school's Valentines Day class parties. There the colorful boxes are filled with candy treats and the all important traditional children's valentine cards from classmates. While kids love the parties, the most fun comes in decorating their own Valentine box in their own unique way. It's an easy and much enjoyed craft that children often look forward to all year.

Choose a box. Most valentine boxes are made out of a shoe box but there are other options as well. A larger Chinese takeout carton is a good choice as are empty cigar boxes. You can also use something that is not really a box at all. These might include a cardboard cylinder container that once held cookies or an empty coffee tin.
After you choose your box, gather decorating materials. Since red, pink and white are the colors used to celebrate Valentine's Day, crepe paper in those colors would be helpful. You can also cut out paper hearts, use foil, stickers or lace to decorate too. How about gluing on candy hearts? Anything can be used to decorate your box in a Valentine's Day theme

  2. Step 2

Cover your box in the crepe paper, foil or whatever covering you have chosen. Glue the paper in place. Use glue or tape to attach the lace or heart cut outs. Or use a marker to draw hearts and designs on the box.

Repeat the decorating process on the lid. Cut a slit in the lid big enough to allow the Valentine's your child received to pass through.

  4. Step 4
    Valentine cards

Place addressed valentines for your child's classmates inside the Valentines box. After passing them out, your child can collect his Valentine's cards and carry them home in the valentine box to share with you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure any glue used is non-toxic. Make sure any parts used are not so small that they will pose a choking hazard for younger children. Use approved child safety scissors for any cutting.
