How to Put a Guitar Strap on a Guitar

Playing in a band usually requires playing standing up. In order to do this, you'll need to get up off the couch, put on a guitar strap and strum from your feet. Putting on a guitar strap is not difficult, but there are different types of straps. Depending on your guitar, you'll need to do a few things to get it securely fastened.

Determine the type of guitar you have. If it is an electric, it should have two pins: one pin on the base of the body, below the bridge, and another pin on top of the body of the guitar closest to your left hand when holding the guitar standing. Take the strap and secure the two pins through the two slots on each end of the the strap. Adjust the strap so that it is comfortable for playing.

Follow the same steps with an acoustic guitar if it has the same two pins. Be careful when attaching the strap to not unscrew the pins on the guitar. If you do, the strap could come loose while playing and you risk damaging the guitar.

Determine if your guitar only has a pin on the base of the guitar. For these types, you have two options: you can get another pin installed on the top of the guitar so you can follow the process above (self-installation is possible, but be careful and consult a professional so as not to damage the reverberation quality of the instrument), or you can buy a strap that has a cord on one end. For these straps, loop the pin through the slot on one end of the strap and tie the cord around the neck of the guitar, just above the nut.

Find a guitar strap that is adjustable. These straps are readily available at most music shops and will give you a comfortable length for stand-up playing. Periodically check the pins (especially in acoustic guitars) to make sure they're not coming loose from increased playing. Always check to make sure the strap is secure on the guitar before you pick it up and place in around your shoulder.
