The electronic press kit is a band's calling card.

An electronic press kit or EPK is a musician's resume. It's a file that showcases the band's look, music, story, performances and positive press. You may chose to do a EPK as a pdf file with accompanying mp3s or use a service that compiles all your information and is easily updated with new music, photos, music videos and venue dates. Using a service gives you the added bonus of being plugged into the promoter community which has added exposure for the band.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a biography. Tell promoters and music executives the band's story and it's origins. Talk about the music, it's sound and the direction or career trajectory the band is striving for with the music. Include any interesting yet relevant facts that will make the band stand apart from the crowd.

    • 2

Include photos. Use photos that show what the band looks like that immediately give promoters and executives an idea or inspiration on how to promote the band and the brand. Include photos of rehearsal sessions, live performances and professionally photographed candid shots of the band having fun. Make sure all members of the band are represented in the photos you select for the press kit.

    • 3

Create sample CD or DVD of your music. Choose the best examples of the band's sound, songs that exhibit the band's range and any new music or videos. You can also include lyrics to the songs. There are some websites like Sonicbids, Artist eCard or ReverbNation that will embed your mp3s or music videos into the kit with the click of a button.

    • 4

Create a section that showcases all positive press and quotes from music publications, bloggers and radio personalities. Keep it short and accurate. Input direct quotes and site sources. If there is no press yet, exclude this section.

    • 5

List upcoming gigs on the band's schedule. Be sure to include the venue, date and time of the performance. Also include information for promoters like any specs the band will need for future performances.

    • 6

Create a page with your contact information. Include the name, phone number and email address of the person responsible the band's schedule for any promoters who want to book the band. Also include all the band's social networking information here. The band's twitter, Facebook, myspace and personal website should be promoted to increase fan base.
