Eyeshadows. When buying eyeshadows online from discount beauty sites or auction sites, make sure that they are unused first. People do and try to sell items they have used and do not like. The eyeshadow box should have a bar code sticker on the bottom and a color label on the top with a Name on it - not a number. The eyeshadow case itself should have a black sticker on the bottom with the color name and number, the case should be black unless it is limited edition, and there should be no applicator. MAC makes professional brushes. If you are paying under $8 beware and even at $8 it would be an unpopular color.

Pigments. Pigments should have simliar box traits as eyeshadows. Name on the top and bar code sticker on the bottom. Make sure the bar code is not printed on the bottom, but an actual sticker. They have a black lid and protective plastic lid inside, but no shaker holes. Most authentic ones can be had for $10 and up if they are boxed. MAC does make holiday mini pigment charm sets that people may sell seperately.

Lipglass, plushglass, dazzleglass, and other lip gloss products. Boxes should say MAC on the front and there should be a round color name label on the bottom. The label's color can vary based on the product and if it is limited edition. They wand handle can also vary depending on the product. Lipglass (smooth), plushglass (rubbery), 3D glass (shimmery). No numbers are on these products and again the bar code should be a sticker, except on some of the newer boxes.

Other products. Look for the bar code sticker again and the color name. MAC is known for creative color names and never just numbers the product. Brushes should be black handled (except limited editions) and silver MAC logo and brush number on the handle.

General tips. Look at the seller or websites customer ratings. Some sellers do have the connections to get wholesale closeouts and the little know source is the Cosmetics Company Store outlets who closeout MAC, Estee Lauder and other brands owned by the company.
Use your best judgement - if it seems too good to be true...it probably is.
