1
HAVE PRIDE IN YOUR APPEARANCE! Part of being a gentleman is to have pride in both your physical appearance. This means being clean, having a well put together wardrobe and keeping your body healthy. To be a proper gentleman you should not have underwear hanging out or anything too gaudy. You can still be a gentleman you have tattoos or piercings as long as they respect the other two steps as well.

2
SHOW RESPECT TO OTHERS (particularly women and elders)! Your actions need to demonstrate respect for other people. When you are living your life you need to be noticing other people and thinking about how you can make life easier for them. This includes helping push a car that died in the middle of an intersection, offering to help an elderly person cross the street, opening the door or pulling out a chair for women of any age. Respect can also be shown through being a sincere listener. Putting the other person's needs before your own is the key, a woman should order first, when walking on a sidewalk you should be closest to the cars, etc.

3
TRY NOT TO OFFEND OTHERS! This is another defining characteristic of a gentleman, and can also be called "Good Manners." To avoid offending others someone would avoid using curse words, avoid controversial topics such as politics and religion with acquaintances and refrain from vulgar acts such as spitting in public or even raising ones voice in public.

Tips & Warnings
Checking out a good manners book from the library or investing in one for men can be very helpful in your attempts to be a true gentleman.
While the media very rarely shows men as gentleman these days do not feel that it is unpopular. Almost anyone would prefer having a gentleman around than not.
If there is a conflict between how you act with old friends, you can choose how to act around them. But mature friends will understand when someone is trying to better themselves. If they do not understand you may just want to give them time.
