Make Inside Corner Molding Joints

Coping molding joints is a technique of cutting the edge of a piece of molding to fit the contour of another piece (same style) of molding. This is the preferred method of doing inside corners for baseboard molding, by most carpenters over doing miter joints for inside corners. Coping is the preferred method because most walls are not 90 degrees to each other which is key in making a mitered joint look good. In order to do this technique you will have to purchase a coping saw if you don't have one. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

The first piece of molding is installed with straight cuts to fit in between the two walls. In this case this piece of molding is between the doorway molding and the wall.

    • 2

Using a miter saw cut a 45 degree angle on a piece of molding long enough to span the wall in which it is going to be installed. Notice that the long side of the angle is toward the inside corner.

    • 3

By cutting a 45 degree angle on the molding it allows you to scribe along the face of the molding. This molding happens to be primed and really helps with seeing the contour of the molding.

    • 4

With your coping saw start cutting from one end of the molding holding the saw at an angle so that you back cut the molding. Back cutting ensures that the back side of the molding will not prevent the face side from butting up against the adjacent piece.

    • 5

Continue cutting along the edge of the molding.

    • 6

Now the molding should resemble the contour of the adjacent piece of molding.

    • 7

Now cut the molding to fit the wall by measuring from the coped side of the molding cut the opposite side with a straight cut. Attach the molding to the wall using finishing nails.

Tips & Warnings

  • You may want to practice on a couple of scrap pieces of molding.

  • The most critical part of scribing is along the long straight part of the molding. Once you get to this part you may want to try a regular wood saw.

  • Always wear safety glasses when using power tools.
