How to Write a Psychology CV

The curriculum vitae is quite different from a normal resume. It is important to understand, before you start creating your CV to get a job in psychology, that you'll need to include more information. You should have all of your information compiled in one place before you start writing.

Instructions

    • 1

Do some research. Check your local library and the Internet for several samples of CVs, so you can familiarize yourself with the requirements of a curriculum vitae. Even if you're new to the profession, your educational endeavors will have provided you with some of the necessary experience, qualifications, memberships and presentations necessary to create a strong psychology CV.

Start sorting your facts. It is usually easier to organize your facts on paper before sitting down to put them into a document. You can save yourself some time and frustration just by getting these things organized in advance.

With everything written out and organized, you can now start to put your information into an electronic format, using your favorite word processing program. Start with a blank page and don't use templates. Do your own formatting to avoid any problems you might have in copying and pasting in a text box when doing an online job search. Check to make sure that all of the newest industry buzzwords are included in the natural language of the CV so that it will be picked up in an online search, if you are going to post your CV to a niche job site.

After you've finished, get some friends and colleagues to read your CV to look for any obvious errors and give you their opinion.

    • 5

For added affect, and if you're a very experienced psychologist, set up a nice presentation folder and either hand deliver or mail your CV on resume paper with matching folders and envelopes. Another nice touch for hard copy submission is to create a presentation package that includes your business card. You can find kits that include the paper, folders, envelopes, business card folder and thank you notes with matching envelopes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't try to do it all at one time. Spread it out over a few days.
