BlackBerry-branded smart phones handle ringtones differently than other phones. While general-purpose handsets and other smart phones generally have subscription-based services that allow you to purchase and download "premium" ringtones every month using a specific application, the BlackBerry requires you to find your own ringtones. There is no bundled application, which may be a little bit inconvenient initially, but once you get used to it, you will find that finding and installing ringtones is much easier, as it allows you to use any audio file on your phone as a ringtone.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Click on the BlackBerry menu button above the phone's text pad on the left. This will bring up a list of application and settings icons.

  2. Step 2

Scroll over to the media icon with your trackball and click on it to open up the media center application. Scroll over to the ringtone icon and click on it to see a list of available tones. You can preview them by clicking on them with the trackball, or set them by pulling up the settings menu by pressing the BlackBerry menu button.

  3. Step 3

Set custom tones. If you want to use different ringtones for different people, go to your address book, which is accessible via the main menu, and select the listing of the person you want to have a specific ringtone. Pull up the Edit menu by pressing the BlackBerry menu button and then select the "Add Custom Ringtone" menu option to set the new ringtone.

  4. Step 4

Create a custom ringtone. If you are unhappy with the standard ringtone options on your BlackBerry Bold, you can create your own using any song or sound effect that you have downloaded to your device. Enter the media center application and go to the "Music" section. Select the song or sound effect you want and press the BlackBerry menu button. Click on the "Set as Ringtone" option, and the first twenty seconds of the song or sound effect will become your ringtone.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is easy to share ringtones with other BlackBerry users by attaching song or ringtone files to email or BB mail messages. When the recipient gets the message, all he or she has to do is save the attachment in the Ringtones folder, which is located in the BlackBerry Bold's media section.
  • If you keep a lot of media on your phone, it is a good idea to create a separate ringtone folder on a micro SD card so you don't run out of room, since the BlackBerry Bold's hard drive is not that big.
