Adware is harmful to your computer. These types of files are downloadable from untrustworthy websites. If you are unsure of the content from a certain site, you may wish to avoid it. However, it is not always clear that a website will place harmful material on your computer. Adware can cause your PC to lag or slow down, surfing the Internet could feel sluggish and certain programs could error for unknown reasons. If you feel that you have adware, you can remove the files free.

  • Go to Lavasoft website. Click on the "Download Ad-Aware Free" button on the right-hand side of the screen. Choose the "Download" button under "Continue To Download". Again, you will select the "Download Now" link. A save window will appear. Choose "Save" then select the folder. Wait approximately five minutes on a cable or DSL modem.

  • Install Ad-Aware Free. Click on Ad-AdwareAE.exe in your download folder. Wait until the program initializes. Then select your language. A screen will appear, choose "Next". You will need to reboot your computer after the installation is complete. The application will then automatically update.

  • View the Ad-Aware program. It should automatically start after updating. If it does not, go to "Start Menu", "All Programs", "Lavasoft" and "Ad-Aware". Click on "Scan System" and choose the "Full Scan" tab. Then press the arrow above, "Scan Now". The process can take up to three hours, depending on the size of your hard drive and speed of your computer.

  • Finish the scan. A box will pop-up if you do not have adware. If you do have adware, you will have the option of deleting the harmful files or quarantining them.
