How to Write a Story About Halloween
Halloween is an annual holiday that occurs on October 31st. While often associated with Celtic and Christian roots, the contemporary American holiday evolved from colonial ghost stories and yearly autumn festivals. Halloween conjures up images of carved pumpkins, black cats, costumes, scarecrows, witches and ghosts. Scary stories and movies about Halloween are popular October bedtime entertainment. 1
Begin the story on a dark and stormy night. Spook your reader from the start with a chilling wind, full moon and menacing night sounds. Let the scene evoke fearful emotions.
-
2
Add a ghoul and a ghost or two within the story's narrative. This can be done through a haunted house tour, mysterious ghost apparition or a spooky cemetery tour.
-
-
3
Include traditional Halloween lore. Design the main character's journey to encounter carved Jack O' Lanterns, suspicious black cats, bats, skull and crossbones, zombies, scarecrows, werewolves, spiders and cobwebs, candy corn, owls, bubbling potions and witches' brew.
-
4
Inject Halloween humor. Mention costumes, candy, trick-or-treating, friendship and parties. Incorporate a fun moment-- such as a child eating too much candy, or a costume's mistaken identity-- to give your story an interesting twist.
-
5
Let main character escape a witch's grasp. Halloween tales are often seeping with spells and potions--spin your characters into a scary web of sorcery and allow them to plot their escape. Include a witch's broom, cauldron and hat into a scene.
-
6
Describe Halloween scenes in great detail, including colors orange and black and smells. Insert dramatic language and sensory details to captivate the reader.
