Things You'll Need:
- Drivers license, state ID or applicable government ID
- Routing and account number for a checking account
- Social security number
- Mortgage documents if applicable
-
Step 1
Decide on the type of account you want to open based on your objectives and needs. As outlined above, HSBC offers three types of online accounts. The online savings account has no account management fees, no minimum balance requirements and only $1 is needed to open the account. The online payment account is also an interest-bearing checking account.
-
Step 2
Decide on how much you want to put in the account and make sure this amount is available in an existing checking account that is in your name.
-
Step 3
Get the necessary documents. You will need your driver's license or state ID, as the numbers on these documents are needed to fill out the online forms when opening an account. If you do not have these documents the system will tell you what alternative documents are needed and how to send copies to HSBC. You'll also need your social security number or personal tax ID number as well as information on any mortgages you have. This is to verify your identity.
-
Step 4
Register online. Visit the HSBC direct site (see Resources) and click on the type of account you want to open and register by filling in all the required information.
-
Step 5
Open the account and fund it by linking it to your existing checking account and transferring the amount of money you would like to deposit.
