Moen is an Ohio company that manufactures various types of kitchen faucet appliances. A major component in nearly all Moen faucets is the Moen 1225 cartridge. This cartridge assists in the turning of the faucet in order to control the flow of water pressure and water temperature. A Moen cartridge may occasionally need to be replaced, especially if the faucet is aged. Rather than calling a plumber to replace the cartridge, learn how to change a Moen cartridge yourself.

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Pliers

  1. Step 1

Insert the flat-head screwdriver into the top of the Moen faucet between the faucet cover and the edge of the sides of the faucet. Push down to pop off the faucet cover.

Unscrew the screws in the middle of the faucet, using the Phillips-head screwdriver. Remove the faucet body to reveal the Moen cartridge and nut.

  3. Step 3

Grab the nut with the pliers and turn counter-clockwise to loosen and remove it.

Lift the old Moen cartridge out of the base of the faucet, using the pliers. Push the replacement cartridge into its place.

  5. Step 5

Slide the nut back over the cartridge and turn clockwise, using the pliers to tighten it securely.

  6. Step 6

Place the faucet body back over the nut and screw it back in, using the original screw and the Phillips screwdriver. Replace the round faucet handle cover.

Tips & Warnings
  • Old Moen cartridges may not be in the best shape. Remove them carefully to avoid breaking the old cartridge and leaving pieces in the faucet.
