There are three main types of household vacuum cleaners available; cannister, upright and handheld. For this article we are only going to talk about the cannister and upright styles. Decide which type is best for you.

        1) The cannister vacuum: This style has been eclipsed lately by the newer upright models but it still has it's place. These models excell at getting under furniture since the 'workings' are housed in a seperate unit and the 'business' end is quite low to the ground. Choose this type if you have lots of furniture to get under or complicated maneuvering to do. Another advantage of cannister vacuums is they take less storage space, generally fitting in the bottom of a closet.

        2) The upright vacuum cleaner: This is the more common vacuum cleaner in most homes. It's compact all in one design is generally easier to maneuver around from room to room.

After the type is decided on you need to determine how much suction you need. Generally the higher the motor power the greater the suction. Don't automatically go for the highest suction vacuum cleaner out there as there are some considerations.

        1) If you have lots of area rugs a high suction vacuum is probably NOT the best choice as the vacuum may actually lift and damage the carpet edges.

        2) High power vacuums are generally louder, a consideration if anyone in the household is sensitive to noise.

        3) A high power vacuum will cost more. If you still want a high power vacuum at low cost, choose one with less options and accessories.

After the design and power is decided on look at the bag (or dirt storage in bagless designs) Is it large? Will it clog easily? As a vacuum is used it will begin to lose suction, this isn't a problem with Dyson vacuums though.

A good feature on a vacuum is a hepa filter. Hepa filters will prevent the dirt and dust you just vacuumed up from being blown into the air.

One overlooked feature is a hard floor cleaning accessory. Most vacuums are great on carpeting but are terrible on hard floors as the brushes don't reach low enough. In this case suction is the only one that will do the cleaning, make sure the vacuum is powerful.

Make sure the construction is quality and the warranty is at least two years.

        The Dyson DC25

Make sure the vacuum is ergonomic and easily maneuverable. The Dyson DC25 is awesome in this respect. Some are self propelled but in my opinion this is more gimmic than useful. Just ask yourself how often you just go in a straight line.

Make sure the vacuum cleaner comes with a long cord, especially if you will vacuum stairs or large rooms.

There are some features that are more gimmic than useful, dirt sensors and dust sensors are nice, but I wouldn't pay extra for them. Instead i'd like a large dirt resevoir and long cord.

When you're ready to buy a new vacuum cleaner or just read some reviews consider online sellers to get the best vacuum at the best price possible. There are some great links right on this page and, with no storefront to maintain, their prices are generally lower

    Tips & Warnings

    • Make sure you consider the type of vacuuming you do. Do you have lots of area rugs or hard flooring? Get a vacuum designed for the type of cleaning you need to do

    • Don't buy a 60hp, 150 pound vacuum for grandma, she'll never use it

    • If household members have asthma or allergies make sure to get a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter
