-
Step 1
Open iPhoto and find the picture you want to change to black and white.
-
Step 2
First we're going to duplicate the picture so you still have the original. To do this, while the picture is selected (you'll know it's selected when a yellow box surrounds the picture) click the "Photo" menu on the tool bar.
-
Step 3
Select the "duplicate" option. You're screen will flash and the duplicate picture will appear as the last photo in your file or album. It's important to note it will not appear directly next to the original.
-
Step 4
Now that you've made your iPhoto duplicate, double click the picture so it takes up the entire right side of iPhoto.
-
Step 5
In the bottom left corner under the picture you'll see a little pencil icon with the word "edit" under it. Click the pencil.
-
Step 6
Your photo probably looks about the same now, but with a white background, instead of black. You'll also see all the pictures from your file along the top of the screen.
-
Step 7
Directly under your picture you'll see a square icon with 9 little boxes inside of it. It's labeled "Effects." Click the icon.
-
Step 8
A box comes up offering several different ways to change and edit your photo. In iPhoto to turn your picture black and white you'll want to select the first option labeled "B & W" so it says "On." Once you select "B & W" close the small "Effects" screen. See the image to the left for more detailed information.
-
Step 9
Click "Done" to save the black and white version of your photo. To learn how to undo editing and effects changes in iPhoto see the link in the Resource Section directly below.
