Lavender essential oil is considered the most well known and multifaceted essential oil. Universally loved for its fresh floral-herbal aroma, lavender essential oil plays a therapeutic role in many different ailments, ranging from acne to arthritis. The mildest of essential oils, aroma therapists recommend starting out with lavender essential oil when beginning to dabble with essential oils.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 100% essential oil of lavender
  1. Step 1

Choose a 100% lavender essential oil from a reputed company. Made using a steam distillation process, the essential oil is made most commonly from the flowers of a lavender plant called Lavandula Angustifolia. Don't buy 'lavandin', which is widely available as a cheaper alternative to the 100% essential oil, but has no medicinal value at all.

  2. Step 2

It is officially cough and cold season. Lavender essential oil has disinfectant properties that keep germs at bay. Make an air-freshening spray with 2 cups of water, 10 drops of lavender oil, and a quarter teaspoon of tea tree oil, and spray liberally around the house. Place cotton balls soaked in lavender essential oil in your bathrooms, your car, and in your purse.

  3. Step 3

Fight hair loss using the antiseptic and antifungal properties of lavender essential oil. Natural health magazine had published a hair loss remedy that suggested combining 2 teaspoons of jojoba oil with six drops of lavender essential oil, and 9 drops of rosemary essential oil. Apply the mixture to your scalp regularly to keep the hair follicles alive when fighting hair loss. While the magazine suggested this remedy for alopecia aereata, I had used this remedy to fight post partum hair loss.

  4. Step 4

Use lavender essential oil in your skin care routine for its balancing and regenerative properties. Combine a few drops with a carrier oil like sweet almond, and use as a body moisturizer. Apply it straight out of the bottle on acne, and insect bites. Take a bottle with you when hiking, and apply it on blisters.

  5. Step 5

Lavender essential oil is most known for its calming, and relaxing properties. Use an aromatherapy diffuser to diffuse the oil around the house, or burn some in an aroma lamp to fight stress. Add a few drops in the bath to calm down a hyperactive child. Use a few drops on a Kleenex, or paper towel, and place it under a pillow to help with insomnia.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use some on your dress or scarf when traveling by air to fend germs, and calm anxiety.
  • Add a few drops to a vaporizer to fight coughs and colds.
  • Do a patch test if you have sensitive skin.
