Be sure to have plenty of tissues on hand, preferably the kind with lotion. The lotion combats the irritation of continuous wiping. Also have plenty of juice, to bulk up on vitamin C as well as to help keep your body hydrated, if you should be running a fever.

Keep plenty of your favorite cold medicine on hand. My husband likes DayQuil for daytime use and NyQuil for nighttime use. I have high blood pressure, so I have to be careful which cold medications I take. I usually take Coricidin HBP.

The next step in soothing the common cold is to rub a generous amount of Vick's vapor rub on your chest. Take a bath towel and heat it in the microwave, until the towel is comfortably warm. Place the warm towel next to your chest, under your shirt. You may fasten the towel to your shirt with large safety pins, to hold it in place, if you so desire.
