1
Be approachable. Be pleasant and have a smile on your face when you go to speak to someone you don't know. The more approachable you seem, the more inclined the person will be to talk to you.
-
2
Talk about a common topic for the both of you. For example, if you are at a party, ask the person how he or she knows the host. If you are sharing the same plate of food, ask what he or she thinks of the meal.

3
Do not complain, especially when it is your first time speaking to someone. Keep the conversation and mood light.
-
4
Ask questions that can't be answered with one word. If the person does answer you with a single word, ask a follow-up question to have the person expand on his or her answer. This shows that you are interested.
-
5
React to what the person tells you. Laugh at a joke or show interest when the person tells you a fact. This will make people more comfortable with you and will allow them to open up about their lives.
-
6
Make eye contact. Avoiding a person's eyes will make you seem shy and uncomfortable, and makes the other person uncomfortable, too.
