This article will teach you how to resolve an IP address to a computer name.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows OS
  1. Step 1

To find a computer name if you only have an IP address you must first get to dos. This article assumes that you are using Windows XP 98 95 or any other previous version of windows that has dos. Click on start then select run and type in cmd in the run field and press enter.

  2. Step 2

A black dos prompt window should pop up. Make sure the focus of your cursor is in this window to type.

  3. Step 3

In the dos window type the following. nslookup 'ip address here' So if you were looking for the machine name of 78.64.228.156 you would type nslookup 78.64.228.156. Press enter and the window should tell you what computer belongs to that address. This is a handy troubleshooting tool when you are trying to figure out who owns a particular site or computer on the internet.
