Do you keep getting annoying emails from a particular sender through Gmail? Or perhaps you'd rather route your email from a specific sender directly into a label for better organization? With the robust filtering capabilities of Gmail, your options are numerous. In this article, you'll learn how to set up a filter in Gmail.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A computer with an internet connection
  • A Gmail account
  1. Step 1

Scenario. You often receive messages with attachments from a trusted source, but for some reason your email gets sent to your spam folder. You want to create a filter that tells Gmail, "For all messages that have an attachment, never send them to the spam folder."

  2. Step 2

    Log onto your Gmail account.

  3. Step 3

In the upper right corner of your screen, click Settings to go to the Gmail Settings page. The General tab displays.

  4. Step 4

In the top menu, click Filters to go to the Filters tab.

  5. Step 5

At the bottom center of the page, click Create a new filter. The top of the page changes to display several input fields.

  6. Step 6

Under the Has the words field, check the Has attachment checkbox.

  7. Step 7

Click the Next Step button to display a list of checkboxes.

  8. Step 8

Check the Never send it to Spam checkbox.

  9. Step 9

Click the Create Filter button. Your Gmail filter is now active and appears on the Filters page. Now whenever you receive an email with an attachment, Gmail will always route it to your inbox.

Tips & Warnings
  • After creating your Gmail filter, you have the option of editing or deleting it.
  • Other Gmail filter options include immediately deleting email from a sender; routing email from a specific sender directly into another folder; and forwarding email using specific criteria to another email address.
