Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
You'll need to understand mega pixels and how they work to decide how many mega pixels your digital camera will require. Mega pixels are measured in dots per inch. The more mega pixels, the better picture quality, especially when enlarging photos. For the general user, a 7 mega pixel digital camera should serve you well. For photography enthusiasts, a 10 mega pixel camera will be desired.
-
Step 2
SRL Digital cameras are generally for photography savvy individuals, photography students or professional photographers. For your average point and shoot user, this is not a good choice for a camera. This type of digital camera will cost much more money than a digital point and shoot camera.
-
Step 3
Many personal computers, laptops and printers are now equipped with memory card slots. Be sure to note which memory cards your computer and/or printer accept. If you purchase a digital camera with a memory card that is not compatible with your computer or printer, you will have to connect your camera directly through a USB cable and port which may be somewhat annoying, especially for those users who's USB port is in the back of the CPU.
-
Step 4
Do your price research online before entering a store. Very often the price on the same camera will vary from store to store. Some stores will even charge more in the store than online so beware!
-
Step 5
Browse online coupon websites and the Sunday paper. Many stores will advertise sales and coupons through these chanels.
-
Step 6
Haggle when shopping in an electronics store or photography store. Retailers are having tough times and are desperate to sell their goods. If you are purchasing additional photography equipment such as a camera bag, memory card, rechargeable batteries or software, you will have much more to bargain with. Some retailers will even throw in extra accessories or a service warranty if you ask. Be sure to mention competitors prices, the store you are in may actually have a price matching policy.
-
Step 7
Craigslist and Ebay may be other options for purchasing a new digital camera. Use caution when purchasing through these avenues. Often returns are difficult or not available.
-
Step 8
When browsing digital cameras on line, be sure to read the buyers comments for ratings. These are often a good indicator about the general use of the camera and camera accessories.
