This play looks similar to the sweep, and executes in a similar way as well, except for the right guard cutting back to trap the end outside.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Footballs
  • Footballs
  1. Step 1

Set the offense in a split-back formation. Place seven players on the line. Position from the quarterback's left: split end, a space of 5 yards, tackle, guard, center, guard, tackle, tight end. Two running backs stand ready a yard behind the quarterback, one slightly to either side. Finally, a flanker is set 5 yards to the right of the tight end and 1 yard off the line of scrimmage.

  2. Step 2

Launch the play to create a small hole on the strong side between the tackle and tight end.

  3. Step 3

Send the split end to cut toward the flag (corner of the end zone).

  4. Step 4

    Instruct tackle to hook tackle.

  5. Step 5

Instruct the guard to reach beyond to stop the left linebacker.

  6. Step 6

Have the center block the nose guard.

  7. Step 7

Have the right guard run laterally to trap the right end on the outside.

  8. Step 8

Instruct the tackle and tight end to double-team the defending tackle.

  9. Step 9

Send the flanker to block the right corner.

  10. Step 10

Instruct the quarterback to open to the left, then reverse-pivot and pitch to the left running back.

  11. Step 11

Instruct the quarterback to become a blocker after tossing the pitch, leading through the open channel at the tight end's right. He must block the strong safety and prevent his movement left.

  12. Step 12

Send the right running back after the quarterback, blocking the first defender on the inside, which will likely be the right linebacker.

  13. Step 13

Instruct the left running back to trail his vanguard and break for open field.

Tips & Warnings
  • When the right end remains uncontested, he will likely run forward. Your guard must watch and catch him before he disrupts the open channel.
  • Follow these steps assuming your line faces a basic 5-2 defense (five players on the line of scrimmage, two linebackers behind, a corner on either end, and two safeties in back). Adjust the blocking slightly to counter varying defenses.
  • The sprinting running back, goalposts and glory in his mind, must first deal with the wily free safety. Run fast, dear boy.
  • Football is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
