How to Braze Aluminum

Brazing aluminum joins two pieces of aluminum together to fix broken aluminum pieces or create something new. It makes the aluminum stronger by creating bonds that are not easily broken. Much like welding or soldering, brazing utilizes heat and metal to bond pieces of another metal together. Brazing requires a skilled hand and care. In the brazing process, a metal filler is melted then spread along the joint, and protected with a flux material.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire brush
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Clamp
  • Welding gloves
  • Protective mask

Instructions

    • 1

Use a wire brush and rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or grease on the aluminum.

    • 2

Secure the aluminum in place with a clamp.

    • 3

Ignite the flame on your torch. You want a soft, blue flame.

    • 4

Heat up your flux and coat the tip of the joint you're bonding with flux. Do small daubs of flux to keep the aluminum from heating up too much.

    • 5

Let the flux dry and cool.

    • 6

Let the aluminum sit in cool water until it cools off.

    • 7

Use sandpaper to smooth the aluminum.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear protective gloves and a mask. Heat evenly.
