Grandparents on Facebook

You should have already taken the very first step, and joined FACEBOOK. If that's the case --- Congratulations!

As GRANDPARENTS, we don't need to feel intimidated about Internet technology -- however, what we do need to do - is have the confidence -- that IF we are patient with ourselves, AND are willing to take a little bit of time to learn - we CAN be successful!

Now, lets get STARTED adding your personal information, to YOUR Facebook Profile!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer, Internet connection, Facebook account,
  1. Step 1
    Facebook Sign-In Page
    Facebook Sign-In Page

This page should look somewhat familiar to you, because this is where you originally SIGNED-UP for Facebook. After you have signed-up for Facebook, this is the same page that you will return to, and SIGN-IN, each time you want to use your FACEBOOK ACCOUNT.

Once you've entered your EMAIL ADDRESS, AND PASSWORD information into the two boxes on the upper right-hand corner of the page - you are now -- logged into FACEBOOK!

  2. Step 2
    Facebook Landing Page
    Facebook Landing Page

Every time that you sign-in to FACEBOOK, you will automatically be taken to this page, which is called the FACEBOOK LANDING Page.

As you begin to connect with your family on Facebook, here is where you will be able to SEE what they have added to "their" Facebook. Sometimes they will write a sentence about what they are doing; or they might have added some pictures to share with you. This is the happening place on FACEBOOK, so it is always a very fun place to "land" after you have signed-in.

Now, if you notice up at the top, there is a long blue bar that goes across the top of the screen -- and you will see the word PROFILE. You are going to click on the word - PROFILE.

  3. Step 3
    Your Profile or Wall
    Your Profile or Wall

This will take you to your PROFILE page -- which is also considered your WALL. Now, I know that sounds kind of funny, but that's what it is referred to -- all the information that you post on Facebook, is recorded on your WALL. It's kind of like a personal newspaper - about YOU, and this is ultimately what others whom YOU allow to be your "FRIEND" will get to see! Your friends, can also comment on the items that you put on your WALL. It's really very fun -- you'll see.

If you LOOK below that BLUE BAR, at the top of the screen, under your name, you will see a few "FILE" tabs.

We are going to click on the INFO tab, and add information to your Personal Profile.

  4. Step 4
Facebook Information Page or About Me
Facebook Information Page or About Me

This is called your Facebook INFO page -- which is kind of an ABOUT ME. You are going to fill in whatever information, about YOU - that you decide to share with your friends. It is NOT required that you fill in every section. So lets just begin by filling in the very basics. You can also add to it and change the information, anytime you want.

If you look to the right, you will see the EDIT button - click that on and it will take you into EDIT mode.

  5. Step 5
    Edit Mode for Info Page
    Edit Mode for Info Page

You are now, in the EDIT MODE, where you can take your time and click on each of the FIVE options that are available; and add to as desired...

Today, I would like to encourage you to complete as best you can - only TWO of these sections; The BASIC and PERSONAL sections.

VERY IMPORTANT - Once you have filled out the BASIC information, CLICK SAVE BEFORE your proceed to the PERSONAL section - then, you will press SAVE Again.

  6. Step 6
Press SAVE When You Are DONE in the EDITING MODE
Press SAVE When You Are DONE in the EDITING MODE

You can take however much time that you would like in each section, to fill in your desired information. But don't forget to PRESS SAVE - after filling in EACH section.

When you have pressed SAVE and are finished in the editing mode - you will notice the DONE EDITING box, which is BLUE, and on the upper right -hand of the screen -- - make sure and CLICK it, to SAVE ALL of your information!

Tips & Warnings
  • Our purpose as grandparents - are in using Facebook to connect with our grandchildren. Most grandparents are not really interested in a lot of the fancy tools (applications) that are available on Facebook. Grandparents simply want to access the ability to stay in touch with family, and close friends.
  • What you need to remember -- is the email address that you signed-up with -- AND the password that YOU created. So make sure and keep these in a safe place, in case you forget them, which can easily happen to the best of us.
