My mother has made these for years and now I make them. Every party I ever brought them too, they were such a hit with nothing left to take home but an empty pan!
Things You'll Need
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 lb bacon
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 cup catsup
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp. dry mustard
- 1 lb can butter beans
- 2 cans pork & beans (the one pound cans)
- 1 lb can kidney beans
When I make this recipe with my grandmother, she will add even more cans of different beans. Like black eye peas, Lima and on and on. When we do increase the recipe with more beans we will then make it a 1 1/2 pounds ground beef rather than the 1 pound.
Brown Beef, Bacon and onions.
I like to cook mine all the same big pan.
I also use pastry scissors to cut up the bacon into pieces.
Drain out that nasty grease!
I like to use a cool tool I bought at Target.
It is a metal hand strainer.
Shown in this photo:
I prepare another big pot to hold all my items in.
My mother would add all these items to a crockpot.
That style is great for bringing to a party or a good way to keep them warm while having a party.
Add all ingredients except the beans.
Simmer about 10 min. or until it looks well blended.
Pour all the beans into the pot and drain ONLY the kidney beans.
No need to drain the other beans as they add great flavor.
Stir it all up to blend.
Cook for about an hour.
These are amazing!
