Step 1
Visit your state’s Housing Authority website. Most states have some form of a first time buyer grant which will allow you to receive money to help you purchase a home. While not every state does have a first time home buyer program, it doesn’t mean you’re not eligible to receive help. However, this is one of the best places to start. For instance, Delaware residents can receive a grant of up to 3% of the mortgage to be used for a down-payment. Indiana offers a loan which you can turn into a grant and receive up to $3500. For complete state listings, visit http://first-time-home-buyer-s.com/first_time_home_buyer_grants.htm.

Step 2
Visiting the HUD website. HUD is another organization that is great at helping out first time home buyers. They have several different grant programs that you may be eligible for, including grants which help pay down payments on homes, closing costs and other fees. HUD is a very reputable source which can be trusted with your personal information when you are applying for a grant. You can check out the grants they have available by visiting http://www.hud.gov/offices/adm/grants/fundsavail.cfm.
-
Step 3
Visiting www.Grants.gov. This is another website that can be trusted and they work closely with HUD to help get applications for grants in and to provide information about grants to individuals and families. On their page is a search feature which allows you to type in a keyword and look for specific types of grants. You will need to take some time, as searching through the grants can be time-consuming, but also rewarding. Find grants you think you’d be eligible for and download the application right from the Grants.gov website.
-
Step 4
Once you’ve found applicable grants. You will need to fill out applications in order to determine whether you are eligible for the grants or not. Most of these forms can be downloaded on any of the above sites. Different applications ask for different types of information, but you will probably be required to provide information about your income and expenses, where you currently live, how many members are in your family and more. Fill out the applications honestly and to the best of your knowledge.
-
Step 5
Wait and be patient. When you’ve filled out the applications and have sent them in, there is nothing left to do but wait. You will be notified if you have been selected to receive the grant money. Keep in mind that you are allowed to fill out as many grant applications as you wish – and although you may have to provide information about past grants received, it will probably not affect your chances of receiving different grants. Good luck.
