How to Adopt a US Military Unit
Adopting a U.S. military unit is a great way to honor active military personal. Soldiers enjoy the letters and care packages sent that express gratitude. However, some individuals aren't sure how to initiate the process of adopting a military unit. There are organizations designed to connect individuals with active soldiers.

Sign up with Adopt a U.S. Soldier (see Resources). This is a non-profit company that connects individuals and groups with U.S. military units. You can submit your registration information online to receive contact information for a U.S. military unit.

Enlist the help of others. Recruit several family members or co-workers to assist in sending letters and packages. Adopting an entire U.S. military unit is often a task too large for a single person.

Create a package. Packages that are sent to military personal can contain any items with the exception of obscene publications, alcohol, large quantities of religious items contrary to Islamic faith and American flags. If you have any questions about what to send, Adopt a U.S. Soldier can assist.

Include frequently requested drinks. The drinks most soldiers request are Capri Suns, Sweetened Kool-Aid packets, Lipton tea mix and Gatorade.

Include frequently requested foods. When preparing a package, consider including the food items that are high demand. This includes beef jerky, candy, canned meats, canned chips, canned salsa, cookies, dried fruit, Hickory Farms items and nuts.

Include some fun items. The items that are frequently requested are board games, comic books, electronic games, magazines, playing cards, word puzzles, soccer balls and Nerf balls.

Tips & Warnings
Properly address your package. Packages sent to your U.S. military unit have to be addressed in a certain format. The label should include the soldier's full name, APO/FPO address and a return address.
Make sure your package is the right size. Packages sent to military units can't be larger than 108 inches across the longest side or weigh more than 70 pounds.
