Instructions

Building a wheelchair can be fairly simple once you establish the materials you need. To do this, you must take into consideration the size of your dog, the type terrain they walk on most, and what part of their body needs the wheelchair.

If you have a large dog, a wooden or metal frame is best. PVC frames work better for smaller dogs. Support for larger dogs come from straps holding them in. They are typically covered in padding or rubber tubing. You will want to set up the support in a way to avoid spoiling. If you don't have access to padding, strong fabric such as canvas works just fine.

Small dogs up to 65 lbs should have wheels up to 12 inches in diameter. If you're using a PVC design, use threaded plastic or rubber caster wheels. Larger dogs should have 16-20 inch bicycle wheels.

Now that you have your parts, make a few holes into the frame material, attach your straps and wheels. Any adjustments can be made by making new holes and moving the screws closer or further apart.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use scrap metal or nuts and bolts from stuff that is unused or left around to save money

  • Properly set up your wheelchair to fit your dog's size perfectly

  • If using metal, make sure there are no sharp points
