So Oprah has come out and explained that she has "let herself go" and has now reached 200 pounds. She states that she has a sluggish thyroid. I for one feel for Oprah, a medical condition such as a sluggish thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, is a condition that makes losing weight extremely difficult.

So what is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a gland that is said to regulate the metabolism. If the thyroid slows down it cuts the hormone production it needs to regulate the body.

Many women do not even know they have this condition and often just chalk it up to getting older. The symptoms are vast and can relate to a million other conditions. The main symptoms of hypothyroidism are: fatigue, weakness, weight loss difficulties, increased weight gain, pale skin, dry hair, hair loss, muscle cramps, depression, constipation, abnormal menstrual cycles and a decrease in sexual desire.

Looking at that list for a woman could make them believe that these symptoms are part of the normal transition into menopause if they are of a certain age. It is important if you think you have a thyroid issue to have it checked out with your doctor. A simple blood test can determine this.

Eating every 3 hours - Studies have shown that the more you eat, the more your metabolism stays at its peak and helps you lose weight. Eating low calorie mini-meals between your regular healthy meals can help you achieve this.
