If you have new internet service or change your service to High Speed Internet you will need to have a Local Area Connection set up in order to get Internet Access. Also if you have been using your laptop at work under a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and start using it at home, you'll need to make sure you have a Local Area Connection as well. Here's how you get the Ethernet Connection and your Local Area Connection.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Laptop
  • ISP
  1. Step 1

Click on your start button, open Control Panel, and double-click on Network Connections. Here is where you would normally see a Local Area Connection icon. It's not there, proceed to the next step.

  2. Step 2

If you do not have a Local Area Connection installed, click the icon for "Create a new connection" under Network Tasks. You will get the "New Connection Wizard", click next to continue and select your connection type, "connect to the Internet."

  3. Step 3

Select the bullet, "set up my connection manually" and click next. This will take you to the question, "how do you want to connect to the Internet?" Select "Connect using a broadband connection that is always on." This will complete the "New Connection Wizard", click Finish and you're done. You will now be able to connect to the Internet via an Ethernet and Local Area Connection.
