Make a Candy Cane Trumpet Ornament

The shape of a candy cane lends itself perfectly to the creation of this candy cane trumpet ornament. Make enough for a whole band or choir group as special gift ornaments after a holiday concert. Display the candy cane trumpet ornament on a Christmas tree or enjoy the taste of Christmas by eating this yummy treat. The ornament is assembled with the candy canes completely wrapped, leaving them sanitary for consumption.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 candy canes
  • Gold felt
  • Red yarn
  • Brown embroidery floss
  • Hot glue gun
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Small piece of corrugated cardboard
  1. Step 1

Lay the candy canes on a table, one with the crook one way and one with the crook the other way. Slide the candy cane with the crook on the right, above the candy cane with the crook on the left. Position the candy canes with the crooks in between each other.

  2. Step 2

Push the candy canes together. Form a 4-inch oval with the candy cane crooks. The straight ends will extend on either side about 3 inches.

  3. Step 3

Hot glue the places where the candy canes touch. Allow the glue to cool.

  4. Step 4

Attach the red yarn to a glued connection on the candy canes with a dot of glue. Wrap the red yarn around the candy canes 10 to 12 times. Apply a drop of glue to the end of the yarn and finish off. Repeat by wrapping the other glued connection on the candy canes in the same manner.

  5. Step 5

Cut a 1-inch wide by 3-inch long piece of gold felt. Glue the short side to one end of a candy cane. Roll the felt around the candy cane end to form the mouth piece for the candy cane trumpet ornament. Glue the end to hold.

  6. Step 6

Cut a 2-inch wide by 4-inch piece of gold felt. Fold over so the 2-inch sides meet. Slip the point of the other candy cane into the folded felt with the fold centered at the tip of the candy cane. Glue the spots on each side of the candy cane stick where the felt touches.

  7. Step 7

Pull together the 2-inch cut ends around the cane to form the horn and wrap several times with brown embroidery floss. Tie off the ends.

  8. Step 8

Cut a piece of red yarn 10 inches long. Attach an end with glue beside the wrapped yarn in front of the candy cane trumpet's mouthpiece. Wrap 3 times. Position the candy cane trumpet ornament's mouthpiece on the right. Place the other end of the red yarn 5 inches to the left. Wrap it around the candy cane 3 times and finish with glue to create the hanger.

  9. Step 9

Cut a piece of corrugated cardboard 2-inches square. Wrap the red yarn around the cardboard 10 times. Slide a 6-inch piece of red yarn under the wrapped yarn. Tie the yarn piece around the wrapped yarn. On the opposite side of the wrapped yarn, slide the blade of a scissor under the yarn and cut to create a tassel. Cut a 4-inch piece of yarn and tie around the base of the tassel 1/2 inch below the center and tie. Tie the tassel to the candy cane trumpet ornament, an inch in front of the mouthpiece.

Tips & Warnings
  • Understanding is actual "hands-on doing" for this project, as candy canes have no real right and wrong side or right and left side. Please refer to the photo when necessary.
