Floating Clock on Forest Screen Saver

The Macintosh operating system comes with a batch of pre-installed screen savers-from an ambient kaleidoscope-to shots of your iTunes album covers-to slideshows of your favorite photos in iPhoto. One added bonus is the ability to add a floating clock to any of the screen savers you have on your Mac, including those you may have downloaded elsewhere. Here is how.

* Note: This is for Mac OSX Leopard (10.5+) only. Earlier versions of the Mac OS will not have this option.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer running Mac OSX Leopard (version 10.5+)
  1. Step 1

Launch your System Preferences on your computer running Mac OSX Leopard (version 10.5 or better). You can access your System Preferences by clicking on the Apple logo on the upper left of your screen and selecting "System Preferences."

It's recommended to put your System Preferences on your Dock for easy access.

  2. Step 2

Select the "Desktop & Screen Saver" option from the "Personal" section of the System Preferences.

  3. Step 3

Click on "Screen Saver" near the top of the Desktop & Screen Saver preferences window.

  4. Step 4

Select your favorite screen saver from the Screen Savers menu.

  5. Step 5

Check the box next to "Show with clock" right below the Screen Savers menu.

  6. Step 6

Hit the "Test" button to preview what your screen saver will look like with the clock.

  7. Step 7

Quit System Preference by clicking on the red circle in the upper left of the System Preferences window or by pressing the Command key and "Q" on your keyboard. The command key is the one with the Apple logo on it.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can't change the appearance of the clock, but at least you'll be able to tell the time by just glancing at your computer screen. There are other downloadable screen savers that allow you to configure the appearance of the clock as well as add alarms and such (see Resources below for more downloads).
