Butterfly Knife Tricks

A butterfly knife, also known as a balisong, is not a toy. In fact, they are illegal in some states, or otherwise restricted to your home. Having said that, hobbyists can find that butterfly knife tricks are calming. With lots of practice, you might be able to impress your friends with these butterfly knife tricks.

Instructions

    • 1

Become familiar with the butterfly knife. When you are just getting started with it, always wear steel-toed boots to protect your feet in case you get nervous or clumsy. (It can happen to anyone. Play it safe.) Another security measure you can take is to place a strip of electric tape over the sharp side of the blade.

When the butterfly knife is closed, you will notice one side of it has the lock dangling down. This is the side that contains the sharp side of the blade--an important detail to remember when practicing your tricks. Even with tape on the blade, you will want to perform the trick as if there is none.

Learn a basic butterfly trick that is the foundation of almost all of them: the open/close flip. There are many ways to do a butterfly knife flip, but you should feel comfortable with one before attempting to learn another.

So let's learn a partial open flip. This is called a partial because you begin with your balisong half open. You will have one handle gripped in your fingers, with your thumb "out of the way." The other handle will be hanging down vertically.

    • 3

In one smooth motion, quickly (and confidently) jerk your hand upward. The hanging handle should begin to move upward.

    • 4

Once the "hanging" handle has passed the a horizontal position, give a slight, second jerk upward if needed. The goal is to get that handle in a position that is the exact opposite of its vertical beginning (in other words, completely straight upwards).

    • 5

As the handle passes the second vertical position (upward), quickly jerk your hand downward and allow the handle to fall into your fingers. The blade is now in a completely open position.

Tips & Warnings

  • All balisong tricks can feel simple--once you have mastered them. Remember that a butterfly knife is dangerous. Take baby steps to achieve full confidence when performing balisong tricks.
