Step 1
Consider just how pregnant you'll be when you need the maternity dress. If you're only five or six months along you may be able to fit into a regular empire-waist gown, especially if the material has some stretch to it. Remember, most maternity formal wear is simply longer in the front than the back, in order to account for your growing belly.
-
Step 2
Check with friends, family members and co-workers who've had babies to see if they have any maternity dress you can wear, or if they know anyone who does. Most mothers are more than willing to share their maternity clothes. Keep in mind the maternity dress may not be something you'd normally pick out, but would you rather wear a gown that's not quite you or pay hundreds of dollars for maternity formal wear you'll most likely wear one time?
-
Step 3
Search online auction sites. Many women who aren't planning on having any more children sell their high priced maternity clothes online to recoup some of the money. Check sites like ebay and craigslist.
-
Step 4
Check out consignment shops, Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Even if you pay to get the maternity dress dry-cleaned it will be significantly less expensive than paying hundreds of dollars for the maternity dresses you'd find at a department or specialty store.
-
Step 5
If you must have a new dress consider a maternity bridesmaids dress. You may be able to find a style from last year that's significantly marked down. if you get it in a color like black, brown or gold it won't scream 'bridesmaid.'
