Before entering a certification program, make sure you understand and can apply the certain skills needed in order to become a skilled HVAC technician. These skills include, but are not limited to mechanical drawing, math, a basic understanding of electronics, and basic computer skills. If you think you may be lacking in one of these subject, I would recommend brushing up on your skills and either take a class or read about it before enrolling in an HVAC Certification program.

Define which test you would like to take, as there are various specializations that you can be certified through. To see a list of the various certifications, please see the "Type of Certifications" resource at the bottom of this page. If you already know which exam you want to take, great!

Study for the exam. Research online and speak to people who have already passed the exam to get a feel for what it's like. If you can get a hold of any practice tests or study material, I would recommend doing that. This will give you a clear cut plan of action, and also give you an assessment as to whether or not you think you can pass your exam already without any additional education or technical courses.

If you do feel like you need a little more training, keep the type of exam and the materials you need to study for and try to find a course or program that you can take online or in your local community college. Before you sign up for the class, make sure you directly ask the instructor or college if you are signing up for the right class that will help you pass the particular HVAC Certification exam you want to take. If not, ask for any direction and advice.
