1
Purchase a bowl chuck for your lathe. Because a bowl chuck is different than a gripper chuck for wood stock that is long and held tight at both ends, it will allow a craftsman to work with his stock wood while it is being held only by one end. With this ability, the bowl chuck allows for the wood-cutting tools to go deep inside the vessel from the open end, which is not be held by the lathe.

2
Remove the existing lathe chuck by locking the spindle in place and using a strap wrench to remove the old chuck from the lathe. Removing a lathe chuck can be difficult if a chuck has been secured to a lathe for a long period of time. Attach the strap wrench to the circumference of the chuck and pull toward you to loosen the old chuck from the lathe. When the chuck becomes loose, be sure you are ready for it. Many an inexperienced woodworker has hit himself with the tool due to the chuck becoming free all at once under pressure.

Replace the old wood chuck with the new bowl chuck by setting the chuck onto the spindle and turning it in a tightening movement. There is no need to tighten the chuck too tightly, because that will make it hard to remove when finished. Use the strap wrench to snug the bowl chuck onto the lathe to turn your ordinary wood lathe into a bowl-making machine.

4
Attach your wood stock onto the chuck by finding the center of the block that will be turned into a wood bowl and secure it onto the bowl chuck. The chuck will grip the block so that it can be worked on the outside shape and the inside shape, which can be gouged out to create the inner compartment of the bowl.

Tips & Warnings
Use graphite on the spindle when attaching the new bowl chuck. This graphite will make the installing and removing of chucks from the lathe easier.
Removing chucks can be dangerous because when the chuck becomes loose, it sometime breaks all at once, causing the worker to strike himself with the strap wrench.
