AdSense helps website owners earn additional revenue.

AdSense is the revenue-sharing arm of Google. Through AdSense, you earn passive revenue from Google by selecting and placing ads on your website. The ads you select may be text and images. You may also select videos from YouTube. When a visitor to your site clicks on a Google ad, you earn money.

Tips & Warnings

  • Read all AdSense policies and terms.

  • Google has five types of ads. You select the size, shape and color scheme of your ads. You also select the frames or borders, text, links and background colors of the ads, as well as the YouTube videos. Google selects video ads from a keyword list you enter on its site or from keywords on your website.

  • When someone clicks on the YouTube video, an ad runs first and then the video. You may either select a list of ads by category, such as sports or business, or let ads run continuously on their own.

  • Google advises you to name your ad, such as "home page text 1" or "home page text 2," so that if you want to alter the ad for size, you know on which page it appears. You are allowed to add three text or image ads and three link ads to each page on your site.

  • You don't need to write the HTML code, just highlight and paste it into your website.

  • When you reach $100 in revenue, Google sends you a check the following month.

  • Google won't pay for ads on "link farms," or sites built solely for the purpose of earning revenue.

  • If you put content ads from text or images on your website and users click on them, users are taken away from your site. However, if you put on a YouTube video and users click on your ad, they remain on your site. Therefore, if you don't want users to leave your site, select YouTube ads.

  • You must be able to edit the HTML source code of your website pages to use the AdSense unit code and show ads on your site. Contact your website hosting company or webmaster if you're unable to edit the source.
