How to Set Headlights

The goal when setting your headlights is to have them be able to "meet" at one common point in front of your vehicle. While it can be done at a garage, it is not necessary. Getting to that goal is incredibly easy and only requires a quick flick of the wrist.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive your car close to a (preferably lightly-colored) wall after dark. Your headlights should be pointing directly at the wall.

    • 2

Back the vehicle up at least 25 feet from your selected wall and park on a level spot.

Turn the adjusting screws until the headlight beams "meet." For each headlight there are two adjusting screws: one at the top to adjust vertically and one on the side to adjust horizontally. The tighter the top screw, the higher the light will raise. Loosening the top screw will lower the light. It is similar for the side adjustment: tightening the side screw will bring the headlight towards the center, whereas loosening it will turn the light to the outside.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a two-headlamp system, the high beams will meet at the same place as the low beams. If you have a four-headlamp system, do the low beams first and then turn on the high beams. Repeat the procedure.

  • Make sure you use the adjusting screws and not the bulb retainer ring screws.
