Seat covers of any type are ideal for protecting the seat underneath. As with most objects, given enough wear and tear, the items must be replaced. It is a little more cost effective if a truck car seat needs replacing. That's better than replacing the actual seat. Bench seats in trucks are far easier to cover than bucket seats. It's a process that can be done fairly quickly and with ease.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure Polyester knit fabric Thread 1/8 inch Elastic Sewing machine Needle Pins Scissors
  1. Step 1

Measure the bench seat in your truck. Make sure to write down the length of the seat from side to side. Take note of the span from the back of the seat--down and across--to just below the actual seat.

  2. Step 2

After calculating both measurements, add an additional foot to each one. This is the space that is needed to wrap around the sides and the back of the bench.

  3. Step 3

Purchase a piece of polyester knit, or choose a similar material that has some stretch. It must be the size of your measurements. Also purchase a colored thread to match the knit and a package of 1/8 inch elastic.

  4. Step 4

Place your fabric out on the ground upside down. Pin the elastic to the outer edge all the way around the fabric. Turn the ends over twice to completely hide the elastic. Pin in place.

  5. Step 5

Thread your sewing machine needle with the chosen color of thread. Sew the elastic in place. Remove the pins.

  6. Step 6

Drape the seat cover over your truck bench seat. Make sure it is situated perfectly in place. With a fabric marker, mark on the fabric where your seat belts are.

  7. Step 7

Take the seat cover back into the house. With a pair of scissors, make a 3 inch slit where you placed your marks.

  8. Step 8

Again, place the fabric upside down. Hem back the slits and tack. Do this using a needle and thread. For best and longer lasting results, turn the hem under twice.

  9. Step 9

Place the bench cover back onto your truck seat. Tuck it in where the seat meets the back. Pull the seat belts through the custom-made slits. You are now ready to ride!

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a fabric that has some give. For making your own seat covers, a stretchy knit is best.
