How to Make an Emergency Food List

Disaster can strike at any minute, and with most natural disasters, there's nothing you can do to stop it. Being prepared in these situations is crucial. Having an emergency kit is important for every household and that includes a food supply that lasts for a minimum of three days. Your emergency food list depends on your diet, medical history and the number of members of your household.

1. Include water first. Make sure you have enough for drinking for 3 days. Also plan to store enough water for any food preparation and hygiene needs.

2. Stock plenty of canned ready-to-eat foods, such as vegetables, meat, fish and fruit. In a state of emergency, your body needs all the protein it can get.

3. Gather canned drinks like juice and milk. You can also have dry milk that will last almost indefinitely, but it will need water for preparation. Usually, powdered milk needs to be mixed with water, about 12 ounces for each tablespoon of powder.

4. Store non-perishable foods like containers of nuts, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, chips, dried fruit and packaged toast. These food have a long shelf life and are a great source of energy. Make sure you include some sugar, salt, and pepper.

5. Don't forget to store a bottle of multivitamins. Vitamins will be a boost to your diet and make sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs.

6. Remember to add special items depending on your household needs. Some examples of this are baby formula if you have a baby or sugar free foods for diabetics.

7. Include a can opener, scissors, paper or plastic plates, cups and utencils to emergency food list.

8. Check your list again. A lot of the items on the list have a short life period, so it's very important to know the expiration date on all the items. Make sure to switch them out when it's necessary, to keep your emergency kit always ready.
