    Buying a Tuner

  1. Step 1

Get an electronic tuner at a music store. They are not too expensive (starting at $20) and are easy to operate.

  2. Step 2

Ask for a tuner especially made for guitar tuning. It will be able to sense what string you are playing - E, A, D, G, B or E.

  3. Step 3

Place the tuner on a table next to you and turn it on.

  4. Tuning an Acoustic Guitar

  5. Step 1

Pluck the string you want to tune, using the tuner's built-in microphone to pick up the sound.

  6. Step 2

Look at the indicator - a flashing light and/or a meter. It will tell you how close you are to the right pitch and whether you are sharp or flat.

  7. Step 3

Adjust your tuning accordingly by turning the string's tuning key.

  8. Step 4

Repeat this procedure for all six strings of the guitar.

  9. Tuning an Electric Guitar

  10. Step 1

Plug the guitar into the tuner, then pluck a string and watch the indicator.

  11. Step 2

Check the indicator - a flashing light and/or a meter. It will tell you how close you are to the right pitch and whether you are sharp or flat.

  12. Step 3

Adjust your tuning accordingly by turning the string's tuning key.

  13. Step 4

Repeat this procedure for all six strings of the guitar.

on 11/22/2005 An experienced guitar player will be able to tune to the dial tone of a phone. The dial tone is a combination of 'A' and 'F'. Use this to your advantage and you will never have to use a tuner again.
