In 2004, Harley Davidson delivered on a promise to go retro with the Wide Glide model of Harley's brand by including features like factory ape grip handle bars and saddle back design for its Wide Glide version of an American Classic. Custom seats, elongated tanks and consoles made this a highly sought after motorcycle. Regular maintenance requirements include changing the engine and primary fluids to keep this Harley Davidson running smoothly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 quarts replacement motorcycle oil (SYN3 99824-03.00QT) 1 quart replacement primary fluid (#9985105) Motorcycle jack and stand Oil pan
  1. Step 1

Drive your 2004 Wide Glide motorcycle around the block. Bring the engine temperature up so that the viscosity of the old motorcycle oil is lowered, and it flows easily away from engine components and parts. Bring the warm motorcycle into the work space for the oil change

  2. Step 2

Lift and support the motorcycle's frame off the ground using appropriate blocks or motorcycle jack. The bike should remain at a 90 degree angle to the floor so that all the oil can be drained from the engine and primary gear box.

  3. Step 3

Place an empty oil receptor on the floor under the oil drain plug. The oil drain is a tube that is under the engine and connects to the frame. The drain tube has a plastic plug secured in place by a clamp. Loosen the clamp and let the oil drain. Allow the oil to drain for up to 30 minutes to be sure that all the old oil has had time to be pulled out of the engine block by gravity. To increase the air flow, remove the dipstick cap so that air can flow in from the top of the system which might keep some oil in place during draining. Remove the drain plug that is located at the bottom of the primary tank. Allow the primary fluid to drain at the same time as the oil.

  4. Step 4

Refill the reservoirs to the levels that are appropriate for the 2004 Harley Davidson Wide Glide motorcycle. For engine oil you will need to replace 4 quarts of fluid, and for the primary reservoir you will need 1 quart. To prevent leaks, check all connections and seals after refilling the fluids levels.

  5. Step 5

Test your maintenance. Run the motorcycle to be sure that the new oil is circulated everywhere within the engine. Turn the motorcycle off for 5 minutes and recheck the oil level again. If everything is completed well, you will be able to drive another long road before you need to change the oil again.

  6. Step 6

Test your maintenance. Run the motorcycle to be sure that the new oil is circulated everywhere within the engine. Turn the motorcycle off for 5 minutes and recheck the oil level again. If everything is completed well, you will be able to drive another long road before you need to change your 2004 Harley Davidson Wide Glide motorcycle oil in the future.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use high-quality oil and filter product. Avoid damage created by inferior products which look like the good ones, but don't work like the good ones. Always wear safety material when working around machinery. While there will be no ventilation issues with changing a motorcycle's oil, the tools you will use and the temperature of a hot engine can burn or injure someone who is not wearing his safety equipment while working.
  • HOT OIL! The temperature of a hot engine's oil can cause third degree burns. It is possible to get sprayed by hot oil which will result in damage over much of the body. Always wear protective equipment to avoid injury. HOT ENGINE! Wear safety goggles and protective shoes.
