This poor guy is slowly coming to the realization his computer has been infected!

This latest web virus news probably ranks up there as among the more slimy activities on the internet! It turns out that the most active virus over the internet is one called "Exploit Webattacker". This virus is believed to have been developed by a group of Russian hackers who sell it to wannabee badguys for $300 with $25 for upgrades, price includes technical support! This virus strain is no joke! It hides in the iframe of a website. (Iframes or Inline Frame is an HTML element which makes it possible to embed an HTML document within another HTML document. Webmasters sometimes use this technology to embed ads on a wepage. Most webmasters don't even know their websites have been tampered in this way). When an unsuspecting users browses to the infected site, the virus scans for a vulnerability in the host computer called an "exploit" where it will proceed to do various bad things such as download passwords, use your computer as a hub for spam mail, and generally wreak havoc on your operating system.

This situation has gotten so serious that Google is offering a free website, "Google Safebrowsing" to test for websites for malware. (for url look below in the "Resources" section)

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Install a good internet security software
  • Upgrade all your security patches to your operating system especially for Windows users
  • Upgrade your Web Browser
  1. Step 1
Here is the dreaded Google Safebrowsing alert. This means you step on an internet landmine!

Here is the dreaded Google Safebrowsing alert. This means you step on an internet landmine!

Google's safebrowsing website, is a good starting point because it's free and Google has a vested interest in preventing malacious, malware from perpetuating over the internet. See below for the web address for Google Safebrowsing site. To test a suspected website, you just change the "site=xyz" to the suspected url. This site offers a report that tells you the particular strain of the virus, a pretty comprehensive history of infected pages and how the site was infected.

  2. Step 2

For a more proactive approach, check out software such as AVG. AVG has a free and a annual subscription version. The free version of AVG can catch most suspicious html codes on a websites. The paid professional version offers real-time link scanning so that it prevents the user from even entering a dangerous site!

  3. Step 3

If you are so unfortunate to have been infected, my deepest sympathy go to you. You should get an antivirus software post-haste! Most antivirus software have something called a "Virus Vault" which quarantines the virus to a secluded place on your computer where it will do no harm. The more gratifying thing to do is to simply hit the delete key so you can send the offending malware to internet Hades where it belongs!
