Step 1
There are a handful of websites dedicated to scams. Snopes.com is one of the best. The site is also known as the Urban Legends Reference Pages, but also includes a number of common references as well. Other sites you can visit are tafkac.org, religioustolerance.org, and urbanlegends.about.com. You should be able to find most scams that are internet fraud using these sites.
-
Step 2
News sites will often help you in knowing how to check out a hoax. Often they will attack these types of scams as part of newscasts or in columns in local papers. If you hear of a scam going on in your area you can contact local news stations or local papers for information. If they don’t have any information they of ten will have resources to locate the information which they may or may not share with you. Or, depending on how interesting it is they may just run a story about it.
-
Step 3
Search engines and forums can help you to identify if something is truth or a trick. You really can not trust what people post on the internet unless it is coming from a reliable source, however these resources can lead you to find the truth because they may include references to where they got their information. If the reference is valid, then the opinion of the poster may be valid too.
-
Step 4
Logic might just be a last stitch effort, but if you have the mind for it, you may be on your way to figuring out if it something is true or not. You may just know how to check out a hoax all on your own. Especially in the case of internet fraud, you can usually figure it out for yourself.
