Daisy stitch hand warmers are an easy pattern that looks difficult and complicated. These hand warmers are a great starter project to complete before trying mittens or gloves. Here is how to knit daisy stitch hand warmers.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • Double pointed needles
  • Scrap yarn
  • Tapestry needle

    Getting Starting

  1. Step 1

Choose a worsted weight yarn and double pointed needles. You'll need around 350 yards to make the two hand warmers.

  2. Step 2

Knit a test swatch to find out your gauge using the yarn and needles that you will be using.

  3. Step 3

Measure your wrist and around the palm of your hand with a measuring tape. This will give you an idea of how many stitches you will need to cast on. Measure your gauge swatch to determine the number of stitches per inch.

  4. Step 4

Multiply the number of stitches per inch times the largest measurement you had for your hand. Since the daisy stitch is a pattern that goes in multiples of 4's plus one stitch, round up the number of stitches to a multiple of 4 plus one. Therefore, if you get 23 stitches, round up to 25 because 24 is a multiple of 4 plus one extra stitch.

  5. Step 5

Cast on the number of stitches you determined in step 5. Join the stitches in the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches. Knit in k1, p1 ribbing until the knitting measures 1 inch.

  6. Knitting the Hand Warmer

  7. Step 1

Begin the daisy stitch pattern. Knit the first row. On the second row, knit 1, then purl 3 together leaving the 3 stitches on the left-hand needle, yarn over, and purl the same 3 stitches together again letting them drop off the left hand needle this time, knit 1 stitch. Repeat the purl 3 together leaving the 3 stitches on the left-hand needle, yarn over, and purl the same 3 stitches together again letting them drop off the left hand needle this time, knit 1 stitch until you reach the end of the row.

  8. Step 2

Knit all the stitches on the 3rd row. On the final row, knit 1, purl 1, knit 1, then purl 3 together leaving them on the left hand needle, yarn over, and purl the same 3 stitches together letting slide off the left hand needle, knit one. Repeat the purl 3 together leaving them on the left hand needle, yarn over, and purl the same 3 stitches together letting slide off the left hand needle, knit oneuntil you are 2 stitches from the end. Finish the row with a purl 1, knit 1.

  9. Step 3

Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the hand warmer is at the length where you would want to start the thumb.

  10. Step 4

Continue to knit in the pattern until you reach where you want the thumb to go. Knit 1 1/2 inches of stitches with the waste yarn. Pick up the pattern after those stitches and continue.

  11. Step 5

Knit in the daisy stitch pattern until the hand warmer is the length that you want it. Knit in k1, p1 ribbing for 1 inch. Cast off all stitches.

  12. Knitting the Thumb

  13. Step 1

Return to the section that you used the scrap yarn and pick up the same number of stitches that you knitted with the scrap yarn directly above and below the row of stitches held with the scrap yarn.

  14. Step 2

Remove the scrap yarn. Pick up 2 stitches between the top and bottom needles. You will need to redistribute the stitches across 3 needles. You will have 20 stitches in all.

  15. Step 3

Knit all the stitches until the thumb is the length that is desired. Cast off all stitches. Weave in all the ends with a tapestry needles.
