This article will discuss a simple text outlining technique as well as ways to customize size and color of your outline in Photoshop!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Open Photoshop and then select "File" then "New".

  2. Step 2

In the "New" box, you can rename your canvas and change the size of your image. I chose 350 pixels x 250 pixels for my training image. Then hit "ok". A white canvas should pop up.

  3. Step 3

Next, click the "Type" tool in the toolbox menu. It looks like a "T". Note: I am using version 7.0, so the toolbox menu may look a little different in other versions, but the Type tool is the same.

  4. Step 4

Select the area you want to write in on your canvas, and a dotted outline should appear. You should now see a text formatting toolbar above your canvas. You can change your font type, style, size, format, alignment and color.

  5. Step 5

Type your desired text in the dotted outline box, and then click the check mark in the upper right corner of the screen. You can also select another tool in the toolbox to signal you are done typing.

  6. Step 6

In the layers menu on the right side of the screen, right click your text layer and select "Blending Options".

  7. Step 7

At the bottom of the new "Layer Style" box, click the "Stroke" option. Your text will now be outlined in the default red color.

  8. Step 8

Click the word "Stroke", and a new menu should pop up showing you options such as size, position, blend mode, opacity and fill color. Here is where you get to experiment! :) I made my picture using a 2px size, outside position, normal blend mode, 100% opacity and 0AF31D fill color. Have fun!
