Create a New User Account in Mac OS X

With everyone in the family using the computer for everything from movie making to budget balancing, things can get pretty disorganized. Why not make a separate log-ins for each member of the family? Making separate user accounts on the family Mac will prevent Johnny's book reports from getting mixed up with Jenny's science projects and mom's spreadsheets from mingling with dad's documents.

From Quick Guide: About Mac Computers
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select "System Preferences" from the "Apple" menu on the top left of the screen. The System Preferences window will open with four rows of icons. The fourth row is the System row. Click on the "Accounts" icon.

  2. Step 2

Click on the "padlock" icon if some of the selections are grayed out. Enter the administrator name and password for full access to make changes.

  3. Step 3

Click the "+" button and type in the name of the new user. A short version of that name will generate automatically. If you don't like the shortened name, simply highlight it and type the name you would prefer.

  4. Step 4

Select a password and type it into the "Password" and "Verify" fields. Also choose a hint in case you forget the password.

  5. Step 5

Click "Parental Controls" to determine how much access each account can have (see Resources below).
