1
Tell your date you are not feeling well. Headaches are too cliche, so pick an ailment that's a little more creative but can be gone by the next day. "My stomach is all messed up and I have to keep running to the bathroom. Believe me, I'd make a bad date right about now."
-
2
Bring in your family or friends. Say you have to help out a relative or pal with a last-minute emergency. "My best friend just got into a huge fight with her boyfriend. I'm sorry, but I have to be there to console her. She's always been there for me."

Claim pet woes. Nobody can fault you for being an animal lover, not even the person who gets a date broken because of it. "My dog is acting weird. I want to hang around to keep an eye on him and make sure I don't have to rush him to the vet."

Blame your job. Workplaces all over America are demanding more and more of their employees' time. It's plausible that they'd hit you up on a Saturday night. "Would you believe my boss just called and I have to e-mail her a report by the end of the night? She has some important conference call with China tomorrow morning or something."
-
5
Be honest. This is probably the best way to break a date and one where you don't have to pretend. "I honestly don't feel like going out tonight. I'm sorry if I screwed up your plans, but I just need some time to rest."

Tips & Warnings
There are at least three excuses that no one will ever believe. Don't use them. They include: "My aunt died," "My gerbil died," and "I have to wash my hair."

Here's one that is pretty novel: "I have jury duty for the next month." It kinda stretches credulity.
