A reliable babysitter is worth his/her weight in gold. When that right person comes along, you'll do almost anything to retain her services. But after options such as family and friends become exhausted, how do you find the right person? It's all in your search. There are plenty reliable babysitters looking for a good family; just like yours. With the right contacts and a good amount of luck, you may just find one another.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Word of Mouth- Sometimes the easiest search is done by word of mouth. Talk to your neighbors, the parents at your child's bus stop, teachers, coaches, etc. They all deal with children and have either hired a babysitter or may be willing to babysit for you. Networking is a great tool. You may not always find someone this way, but by putting the word out there, you may just find a message waiting on your telephone when you arrive home.

  2. Step 2

Services- It may feel at times that you are the only one searching for a babysitter. The truth is, there are many people in the same boat. In fact, some may already have one. But what do those people do when their babysitter falls ill, takes a vacation, or is unavailable? It is for those exact reasons, that babysitter services were created. Babysitting services do the hard work for you by screening qualified candidates, then matching up the perfect person with your family based on your personal needs. Check the websites below to see if babysitting services are for you.

  3. Step 3

Important Details- Everyone has their own idea of an ideal candidate. However, there are a few important qualities that should never be overlooked. A good candidate will be trained in CPR and First Aid. They should have a current drivers license, reliable transportation, and insurance. Make sure to photocopy this information and keep it part of your records. Lastly, you may want to have a background check performed on the candidate you choose. The candidate will have to give you her permission and sign a form. There is generally a fee associated with each check. So wait until you've narrowed the field considerably. Check with your State Police for the appropriate forms.

  4. Step 4

Home Surveillance- Opinions vary when it comes to home surveillance. We're all in agreement that our child's safety is number one priority, but any security professional will tell you that having cameras doesn't necessarily mean your home is safe. If you're thinking about installing cameras in your home- be proactive. If you already feel there is a problem- Do Not Buy Cameras! Fire The Babysitter! Go with your gut, it's usually right.

  5. Step 5

You've Found Her- So you've found the perfect babysitter. Now what? Don't think she'll be able to read your mind. Make her feel comfortable by giving her a tour, but be firm, and set down the rules the first night. Make a checklist to ensure you remember every detail. Refer to the website below for a fantastic babysitter guide.
